Alumni Spotlight: Brandon Gilchrist, Class of 2017

Gilchrist is the newest member of VWU’s Alumni Council

University News | January 22, 2025

Brandon Gilchrist, Class of 2017, is currently a technology and data integrity manager at Norfolk State University. He also serves as a higher education consultant, assisting multiple institutions with their IT and enrollment management needs. Brandon is married to Taylor (Franklin) Gilchrist, Class of 2016, and together they have three children: Salem, Moriah, and Sinayah.

As the newest member of VWU’s Alumni Council, Gilchrist continues to stay involved with his alma mater. The alumni council serves to strengthen the bond between graduates and the University, its students, faculty, administration and board of trustees. And it plays a pivotal role in advocating for VWU and offering support for enrollment and advancement programs.

“We are thrilled that Brandon is joining the Alumni Council,” says Director of Alumni and Parent Engagement Tina Milligan. “It’s so inspiring to hear how Brandon's experience at Virginia Wesleyan shaped his career and life. The combination of supportive professors, meaningful personal connections, being part of the Track and Field team, and experiencing a solid liberal arts education clearly made a huge difference. It's always powerful to see how the Marlin community continues to positively influence the journeys of our alumni.”

How did your years at Virginia Wesleyan help shape your career?

I am incredibly grateful for the professors who pushed me both academically and professionally during my time at school. They challenged me to think critically, pushed me to expand my limits, and always encouraged me to strive for excellence. Their guidance not only helped me succeed in the classroom but also shaped my approach to problem solving and leadership. The lessons they imparted have been instrumental in shaping me into the person I am today, both in my career and personal life. Their influence continues to inspire me as I move forward.

What activities were you engaged in at VWU?

I was involved in men's track and field, the Marlin Chronicle student newspaper, as a peer mentor, tutor, professor’s assistant, and as an IT Intern.

What did you do before your current role?

I worked as an enterprise resource programmer at Virginia Wesleyan and as an assistant director of financial aid at Norfolk State University before I became a technology and data integrity manager at NSU. I also work as an IT enrollment and technology consultant.

Best memory of your time at Virginia Wesleyan?

One of my favorite memories at school, aside from meeting my wife, is being a peer mentor and helping freshmen adjust to campus life. It was incredibly rewarding to guide them through their first year, offering advice and support when they needed it most. Seeing their confidence grow and knowing I had a small part in making their transition smoother was truly fulfilling. The connections we made and the growth I experienced alongside them are memories I’ll always cherish.

Professors who had a great impact:

I enjoyed my classes with Professor Kathy Ames, Dr. Dan Margolies, and Dr. John Wang. In addition, Coach Mat Littleton was a positive influence on my life.
